Technician inspecting a leaking fitting on a tank water heater

Start with the symptom, not the part

Most water-heater searches start with a symptom: no hot water, a leak, a noise, a smell. This guide is organised the same way. Find your symptom below, read what it usually means, and follow the link to the dedicated service page for the full diagnosis and repair process. Each linked page answers one question in depth; this page exists so you can find the right one fast.

No hot water at all

Every tap cold points at the heater itself: power, gas, thermostat, element, ignition, or a safety shutdown. Start at our no-hot-water diagnosis page, which isolates whole-house versus single-tap faults before any part is discussed.

Hot water runs out fast

A tank that used to cover the household now barely covers one shower usually means a failed lower element, heavy sediment, or a broken dip tube. See tank repair, element replacement, and sediment flushing for the three distinct causes.

Leaking, dripping, or pooling

Fittings and valves leak and are repairable; a leaking tank body is not. Our leak-repair page explains how to tell them apart, and the relief-valve and expansion-tank pages cover the two pressure-related drips most often mistaken for tank leaks.

Noises: popping, rumbling, banging

Popping is sediment steam; banging on tap shutoff is usually water hammer; tankless whining is usually scale. The noisy-heater page matches each sound to its cause.

Rust, colour, or smell in hot water only

Hot-only rust usually means a spent anode and a corroding tank; hot-only rotten-egg smell usually means sulphur bacteria, sometimes interacting with the anode. The rusty-and-smelly-water page separates the two before recommending a fix.

Pressure and temperature problems

Hot-only low pressure means a restriction on the hot path — sediment, scale, filter, or valve. Temperature swings mean thermostat, element, mixing-cartridge, cross-connection, or capacity problems. Each has its own page, because each has a different fix.
